What is Manual Handling:
As an employer, you must safeguard your employees from injuries caused by dangerous manual handling in the workplace. Transporting or supporting a cargo by hand or bodily force is referred to as manual handling. It entails lifting, lowering, pushing, dragging, carrying, or transporting loads.
Manual handling relates to the transportation of objects or materials by carrying, pushing, lowering, or pulling.
There are a number of risk factors associated with manual handling, and the risks are increased if the worker is required to carry the object up and down the stairs.
The associated risk factors include the weight of the object causing muscular or joint strain, the repetitive carrying of a type of object, the range of the lift, and bending, twisting or stumbling during the process of lifting the object.
Main Objective & Aims:
The goal of this course is to give the candidate with theoretical knowledge as well as practical abilities; to recognise the dangers of unsafe manual handling activities as required by the Manual Handling Regulations. The candidate must be able to identify handling dangers and perform manual handling activities safely and competently.
The 5 P's or 5 Manual Handling Principles to avoid injury that we refer to are summarised as follows;
• Plan – plan your lift adequately.
• Position – centre the body & feet correctly.
• Pick – lift item using good posture.
• Proceed – move toward desired location.
• Place – set object down safely.
Basic principles of safe moving and handling:
There are several factors that can potentially present hazards when carrying out manual handling activities. These are a combination of the load, the task, the environment and the individual.
There are some simple steps you can take before and during moving a load.
• Plan the lift and carefully consider whether additional lifting aids are needed. A manual handling risk assessment may also be required at this stage.
• Reduce the distance of the lift where possible
• Map out your route and remove any objections that may cause an obstruction
• Wear suitable clothing that doesn't threaten to obstruct the lift
• Ensure you have a good grip on the load, whether lifting, pushing or pulling
• Ensure the person handling the load has completed adequate training - such as our Manual Handling - online.
• Know your limits and be confident to ask for help if needed.
